Voices on the future of ECDIS and E-Navigation - Dr. Bernhard Berking(University of Applied Sciences Hamburg)

"The majority of all vessels on international trade routes now sail with ECDIS. To carry an ECDIS is even required for many ships. The fear both to trust this “new” equipment and the fear of over-reliance have changed to accepting ECDIS as increasing the safety of navigation - by appropriate standards, the technical progress and effective (mandatory) training. In the future, more ships will deliberately be equipped with ECDIS which is and will increasingly be a “natural” component of navigation equipment such as INS, e-Nav etc... Generic ECDIS training will be a basic component of navigation officers’ education and the required type-specific familiarization
will be left to the ship owners’ responsibility.”

Dr. Bernhard Berking is retired Professor for Navigation at ISSUS (University of Applied Sciences Hamburg), Visiting Professor for Electronic Navigation Systems (ECDIS, radar) at the World Maritime University (Malmö/Sweden) and Lecturer on ECDIS at the Hafencity University of Hamburg (HCU). He was Chairman of the Maritime Commission of the German Institute of Navigation (DGON) and chairman of the ECDIS Working Group of DGON. Today he is lecturer on training courses in ECDIS use for navigators and pilots. © Dr. Bernhard Berking
